Art & Archaeology
Thanks to financial support from the Gutseriev Trust at the University of Oxford, Doug Farthing MBE was able to travel with the team to the Falkland Islands as the Project Artist.
A former airborne soldier who has served in combat zones around the world, Doug was, and is, uniquely placed to use his art to capture materials, memories, emotions, histories, and much more. Linked to the Project, his artwork explores the themes of war, loss, trauma, identity, terrain, and healing. Moreover, Doug’s artwork transcends the boundaries of interpretation and, as an important part of the Project’s public engagement activities, elicits responses from a diversity of audiences.
The Project is consciously using art to get people to talk, think, participate, and interpret. It is anticipated that, stimulated by the Project’s outputs, others – both in the Falkland Islands and elsewhere – will contribute their own creative efforts.
Both art and archaeology are processes. New artwork will be added to this page as appropriate. For now, here are some of Doug’s artworks produced from observation and memories in the field, which he describes as ‘preparatory’ and some sketchbook images produced before departure, which he described as ‘pre-deployment’.
